Lothian Autistic SocietyRecruitment | | |||
Easter Playscheme 2009 Lothian Autistic Society (LAS) started its first playscheme in the Summer of 1992 in response to parents plight for out of school services for children with Autism. In 1995 the decision was made to split the playscheme into 3 areas across the Lothians, ever since a playscheme has operated in Midlothian, West Lothian and Edinburgh. Autism is a life long condition which affects the way a person relates to the world around them. Those diagnosed with autism show significant impairment in three areas; Communication, Social Development and Flexible thought. Often medical conditions, behaviour problems, sensory difficulties, motor skill problems, toileting and dietary problems are associated with the disorder. The playscheme currently offers around 60 places over two venues in Edinburgh, 15 places in Midlothian and 25 in West Lothian. Places are offered on a first come first serve basis to children whose families are members of the Lothian Autistic Society and have a diagnosis of Autism. Playscheme is open to children and young people in full time education between the ages of 5 and 18. Most of the children attending will be matched 1:1 with a carer - but this depends on their needs, and some of the young people attending may need more or less staff input depending on their ability and the nature of the activity scheduled. The aim of the service is to provide:
The LAS currently recruit, disclosure check, train and employ around 150 staff and volunteers each year. Most of whom are students looking for practical experience. All of whom enjoy a great learning experience, feeling like they have done a worthwhile job, while developing excellent employment skills and achieving good career prospects for their CV. The playscheme is mainly funded by Local Authorities. However some of the money for specific therapists, equipment and outings comes from trusts and daily fees payable by parents. The Playscheme day consists of time-tabled activities such as; Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Play specialists, Art and Craft, Sports, Games, Puzzles, Books and out side trips. Almost daily children have access to leisure facilities and outings such as; the Cinema, Swimming, Bowling, the zoo, trampoline centre, Ice skating, Scotland Yard Adventure Centre, soft play and museums. Every year parents, staff, and the young people give excellent reviews and the general consensus is that Fun is had by all. If you have not worked at an LAS playscheme before you will be required to complete a period as a volunteer before being considered for a paid position.
