Playscheme Volunteer
Regardless of experience we require all applicants who have not previously worked at a Lothian Autistic Society playscheme to complete a two week voluntary period.
Lothian Autistic Society will always offer those who have no experience of the issues that surround working with children with Autism the opportunity to work as a volunteer alongside a paid carer to allow them to be guided in a positive manner and build up a clear understanding of the issues that are involved in the playscheme. This is offered on the basis that candidates have demonstrated a clear need for additional support and guidance within the context of the playscheme. This is a progressive role and leaders should always ensure that the candidate is given the opportunity to progress and gain confidence prior to moving them on to working alone with a child in a volunteer care worker role, as described below.
LAS's policy is to offer all, who have not previously worked at the LAS playscheme but who have had some experience of working with children and/or ASD, the opportunity to come onboard as a volunteer care worker in the first instance. A comprehensive training programme is provided to introduce all new candidates to LAS's policies and procedures, together with a range of autism-specific programmes to equip them to work confidently one to one with our children at playscheme and respond best to their needs. Interviews, disclosure, reference and medical checks are made on all candidates.
LAS aim to ensure that all our volunteer care workers are given the opportunity to be properly inducted, trained and receive firsthand experience of working directly with individual children. This is also a progressive role, which can lead onto a paid care worker role after 2 weeks, subject to evaluation from the Playscheme leader.
