LAS provide training in Autism Awareness and Managing Behaviour, where theoretical principles as well as practical approaches to Autism Spectrum Conditions are introduced. Training sessions are interactive and questions and discussions are actively encouraged by the workshop leader.

Autism Awareness

Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome as Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) are explored through reference to the Triad of Impairments and the additional differences (such as sensory sensitivities) that underpin/define this condition. Strategies to help with the specific areas of communication, social interaction and lack of flexibility in thinking and behaviour are also introduced. The aims of this part of the course are:

  • to provide an understanding of the specific difficulties and differences related to ASC;

  • to provide an understanding of how the difficulties and differences manifest themselves in terms of behaviours to look out for;

  • to enable an empathetic approach to working with people on the Autism Spectrum through being able to consider the physical and social environment through the eyes of the individual with an ASC.

Understanding and Managing Behaviour

The concept of ‘challenging behaviour’ is discussed and tools for preventing such are introduced.  ‘General’ prevention tools are explored through developing understanding of possible stressors and triggers. ‘Specific’ prevention strategies relating to the specific areas of the Triad and sensory differences are also introduced. Formalised approaches that can be used to develop knowledge of an individual’s triggers are also discussed. The aims of this part of the course are:

  • to be able to anticipate/predict when ‘challenging’ behaviour may occur;

  • to provide practical strategies to help with the difficulties described within each area of the Triad of Impairments;

  • to provide practical strategies to help with additional differences, such as sensory sensitivities.
