Throughout the year, Lothian Autistic Society work extremely hard to raise funds to offer activities during the October school-term break for our children and young people and their respective families.
The activities we are able to offer do vary depending on funds raised.
Past achievements
In 2008, we offered an exciting 6 day family programme of activities, which was enjoyed by 35 children and young people and their families. Our programme was compiled using information gained from our children on what they liked to do best at playscheme. Days out included Edinburgh Zoo, Mill Farm, Scotland Yard Adventure Centre, with trampoline fun hitting the mark at Orcadia and Lo-gy, as well as soft play fun at Time Twisters.
It was great for me to give my son some freedom in and around the centre, which he doesnt often get as it was so safe and well managed. It was lovely for me to spend time alone with him and enjoy lots of wonderful activities together.
In 2007, we offered a five day residential break for our children and young people and a parent or carer, with meals, activities and transport provided. Twelve children aged between 6 and 14 years took up the opportunity to be adventurous at the Calvert Trust in Keswick and five young people aged between 15 and 18 years, enjoyed time out at the Barnabas Centre in Newcastleton.
The boys didn't cease to amaze us every day trying things we didn't think they would and loving every minute of it!
Intended aims for 2009:
For 2009, we have provisionally booked a total of 40 places at the Calvert Trust in Keswick to allow up to 20 children and young people with a respective parent or carer to attend a 5 day residential adventure holiday. Children and young people attending will have the opportunity to try out new activities in safe and welcoming surroundings e.g. canoeing, horse-riding, climbing, and other exciting activities.
